Engstler Motorsport has today announced it will compete in the 2020 FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup season with two Hyundai i30 N TCR cars.
Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team will field Dutch driver Nicky Catsburg and German Luca Engstler at the wheel of its two challengers. Catsburg brings a wealth of WTCR experience, having competed in all rounds of the 2019 season, while Engstler made two appearances in the series at the Races of Slovakia and Macau.
Both drivers have proven speed in the Hyundai i30 N TCR; Catsburg claimed three WTCR pole positions in 2019, while Engstler secured drivers’ titles in TCR Malaysia and TCR Asia Series. The car demonstrated its competitiveness in WTCR once again in 2019, taking a total of seven wins, 18 podiums, and eight pole positions.
Engstler Motorsport has competed in regional and national championships with the Hyundai i30 N TCR since 2018, winning races in TCR Germany, TCR Asia, TCR Malaysia, and TCR China and championships in TCR Malaysia, TCR Asia and TCR Germany. Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team is confident that it can utilise its experience and knowledge of the Hyundai i30 N TCR car to hit the ground running and challenge for podiums and wins in WTCR this year.
Franz Engstler, Team Principal of Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team said: “Our entry has only been possible thanks to the great support from Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing and Liqui Moly, and to the measures introduced to reduce costs for this WTCR season. It is important that the FIA continues to find ways to ensure the series is financially viable for teams in the future.
“On track, is clear that the i30 N TCR is the car to beat in WTCR, and we are confident we can continue that form with Nicky and Luca. We know we will have to find our feet quickly, and we do not take that task lightly. The competition is strong in WTCR, and we recognise the challenges that lie ahead to assert our credentials. However, our previous experience with racing the i30 N TCR puts us in a good position and we have two talented drivers to help power us to success this year.”
Nicky Catsburg said: “I am really looking forward to working with Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team this year. WTCR is an exciting category and I really enjoyed my return to touring car racing in 2019; every session on track is incredibly close and unpredictable. While the team is new to the series, they are no strangers to TCR and I’m confident that, together, we will be a competitive package.”
Luca Engstler said: “I can’t wait to start my first full season in WTCR. I really enjoyed my first taste in Slovakia and Macau last year and I am raring to go for 2020. Working with Nicky and Hyundai through the Customer Racing Junior Driver program last year proved invaluable for me. We will work hard to keep the Hyundai i30 N TCR at the front of the field in the coming season.”
